Message |
| To improve communication to archers we are distributing
this issue of the ‘SHAFT’ newsletter electronically,
thanks largely to the efforts of Madeleine Ferris. The newsletter
will be emailed to Clubs with a request that they on-forward it
to all their members. Print copies will be mailed to those clubs
which have not supplied an email club contact address and these
clubs are asked to print copies for their members or post it on
their Club Notice Board so that every club member can read it.
The newsletter will also be posted on the SQAS website –
www.archerysqas.org.au.
As you will see, we have an action packed archery calendar for
the remainder of this year, one which has something for everyone.
Major events include:
• SQAS/National Indoor Championships in Toowoomba
• Inaugural Short Range Event to be hosted by GCTA
• Percy Davidson Memorial at Hervey Bay
• FITA Star event at MPB
• Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast
In July, the SQAS Indoor Championships will
again be hosted by TCA at the Toowoomba Showgrounds. This event
is held in conjunction with the National Indoor Championships,
which will be run in each State around Australia on the same weekend.
This year we hope to have a live projection of the results from
the AA website. It doesn’t matter if you come to this shoot
for the serious competition or just for the social atmosphere,
either way this is an event not to be missed. Reminder: Entries
will close on 7 July and we cannot accept any late entries.
In August, GCTA will host a Short Range event
at their club grounds in Emerson Park. This is the first time
the Society has held this event and it is aimed to fill the gap
for those who are not normally interested in tournaments yet would
like to enjoy competing in a social interclub event. The rounds
will be Canberra, Short Canberra, Junior Canberra and Mini Canberra.
We are looking for a large roll up for this one, and a flyer will
go out very soon to your club and the website.
In September, HBA will host the Percy Davidson Memorial
at Hervey Bay. The rounds will be a Canberra on Saturday and a
FITA on Sunday. Why not plan for the weekend away? Again, this
is great weekend away with the friendly folk at Hervey Bay.
In October, rather than a Double FITA, the Society has decided
to offer a different format for archers, with a FITA 70
metre round (12 ends at 70 metres) on the Saturday morning
and a Half FITA (3 ends at each distance) in
the afternoon. A normal FITA will be held on Sunday. Each event
has been separately registered with FITA for archers to be able
to claim achievement awards. And you can enter either just one
event or all three but there will be a discount for participating
in all three. The choice is completely yours, though.
The Target Archery component of the Pan Pacific Masters
Games (for the 30+ archers) will be held on 8-9 November
at the Gold Coast Archery Club.
Again the round at this event will be a Canberra on both days.
See your Club Secretary for a brochure and entry form or visit
www.mastersgames.com.au.
On top of this are ranking events in Target, Field and Indoor
(a good opportunity to work on improving your FITA scores) and
the ‘Silver Arrow’ postal inter-club
competition to help your club be named Club of the Year in one
of the various categories.
In the next edition, I’ll tell you a little about the planning
that is underway for the 2010 National Championships, which will
be held in Brisbane.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestion on any archery matter,
please don’t hesitate to contact me at hagaman@techsus.com.au.
Good Shooting

Scene |
| From Toowoomba Company of Archers
Two of our club members competed in the Target event at the Junior
Nationals this year with the following results:
• Ashton Boully (Junior Men Compound) shot a PB to finish
in 5th place; and
• Ingrid Brookshaw (Intermediate Girl Recurve) won the gold
medal in her Division.
Ashton went on to achieve his 1300 FITA Star badge for the FITA
Round at the recent SQAS Target Championships. Jeff Farrell won
the Master Men Compound division at the SQAS Target Championships,
and then backed it up with the gold medal at the Field Championships
in June. Congratulations to Ashton, Ingrid and Jeff!
In other news, our club is still actively pursuing funding for
a move to a permanent archery range and we’ll let you know
when we have progressed this further.
By the way, TCA Life Member, Tim Cuddihy, recently celebrated
his 21st birthday! For those of you who don’t know, Tim
is currently coaching at the Sydney Olympic Park Archery Centre.
That’s all from us at TCA for now, and we look forward
to welcoming everyone to Toowoomba at the Indoor Championships
in July.

From Centenary Archers
Our Club is still growing strongly and we are actively improving
our grounds, clubhouse and moveable target butts. We should have
toilet facilities installed in the clubhouse ready for the next
Target ranking event on the 6th July. We also have future plans
for a short field course.
All our beginner courses are already booked out for the year
and we could run even more, but we need more instructors. Our
come-n-try days are also very popular.
Next year will be the club’s 25th Anniversary and we hope
to hold a special event to mark the occasion. More on that later
on, though.
Top
From Grange Company of Target Archers
Our club membership peaked at 150 members in 2007/08.
Elizabeth Churchward (Intermediate Girl Compound) attended the
Junior Nationals in April and came third in both the Target and
Field events.
The monthly club shoots, which determine our club champions,
are still the most popular event on the club archery calendar.
Participants score points against how well they shoot against
the classification tables, so everyone has a fair basis to compete
on.
The club is still working to relocate to Samford and we have
secured a long-term lease at the new Samford Parklands (old CSIRO
site). The new Moreton Bay Regional Council is considering the
Development Approval application for the whole Samford Parkland
site as this edition of SHAFT goes to press. Hopefully there will
be a positive outcome and in the next edition we will be able
to report that we are proceeding to build an indoor facility and
prepare the target archery field.
[Note: The achievements of the juniors who attended the Junior
Nationals have been mentioned in the Club reports, and it should
also be noted that Ryan Tyack who is a member of MPB and trains
at the Australian Institute of Sport, also made a clean sweep
in the Junior Recurve division, winning the Target, Field and
Clout events. Well done, Ryan.]

Performance Pathway Program for Recurve Archers |
| Would you like to see how
far you can go in Archery?
Would you like to represent your State or Australia?
Are you prepared to work toward this goal through training and
competition?
The purpose of the Recurve High Performance Pathway Program is
to identify and promote talent in archers who show potential to
achieve an elite level of performance at national and international
level.
The entry level is the Bronze Level and the minimum score ratings
required on a 144 arrow round are: Men - 1085, Ladies - 1093,
Junior Boys - 876, Junior Girls & Cadet Boys - 962, and Cadet
Girls - 988. This score needs to be achieved or exceeded at least
three times during each quarter.
Once accepted into the program, archers will have access to the
following benefits:
• Access and assessment by regional and national coaches
• Invitation to training camps, both regional and at the
AIS
• 25% funding to attend national team selection trials
• Consideration for AIS archery scholarship
• Uniform/badge identifying the archers as being a Bronze
Level pathway archer
There are two further levels in the Pathway Program - the Silver
Level and the Gold Level. Each level offers increased benefits
to the archer as their skills improve.
If you’d like further information on the program, or some
assistance on how you can work towards achieving the entry level
score, please contact the SQAS Coordinator for the Program, Mr
Graeme Jeffrey, PO Box 4006, Raceview, Ipswich 4305 (Tel: 07 3288
9735 or 0411 647 035) or email Graeme at archer@gil.com.au.

| High
Performance Compound Program |
| As you may know, Target Archery has been chosen
as one of the sports in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India and
will include both the Recurve and Compound bow disciplines. This
will be the first time that archery has been included since the
1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, and it is the first time
that Compound will be included.
Archery Australia has set up a High Performance Compound Program
with the aim of improving the standard of our compound archers
to maximise our chances to medal at these Games. Details can be
found on the AA website. If you have aspirations of representing
your country in Archery – start training now and working
towards your goals.

Half Yearly Delegates Meeting |
| Do you have any issues or suggestions you’d
like to put to the Club Delegates at their half-yearly meeting
of the Society on Saturday, 30 August 2008? If so, your Club can
forward items at any time to the SQAS Secretary for inclusion
on the Agenda for the meeting.
Alternatively, the SQAS Management Committee may be able to make
a decision without needing to refer it to the delegates meeting,
depending on the nature of the matter.

CLAIMER! |
| Not normally interested in tournaments?
Well, how would you like to meet and chat with archers from other
clubs in a relaxed day of shooting?
You do? Well we have just the event for you, because the Grange
Company of Target Archers will be hosting a Short Range social
inter-club event on Saturday, 16th August at their club in Emerson
Park, Grange. As mentioned in the President’s message, the
rounds will be Canberra, Short Canberra, Junior Canberra and Mini
Canberra, so there will be a round to suit all ages and standards.
There should be some nice prizes on offer at this event, too,
so why not organise your members, arrange your transport, and
come along for a great day out.

| IMPORTANT
INFORMATION FROM THE SQAS RECORDER (Lois Foster) |
| 1. The current SQAS records are now on the website
and will be updated every quarter. The next update will be to
the 30th June 2008.
2. By way of explanation, Tournament Records are for registered
FITA Star/Arrowhead events, Championships, registered Ranking
Events (QREs) or other events listed on the SQAS calendar. Archers
from more then one club must shoot for a Tournament record to
be valid.
Minor Records are those shot on a normal Club day. However, the
SQAS Recorder must have a copy of the Club’s annual shoot
calendar to confirm that the archer shot the listed round. Reminder:
Has your Club provided a copy of your annual club calendar to
Lois?
3. How do I go about claiming a record?
The SQAS Recorder checks all scores for tournament records from
FITA Star/Arrowhead events, Ranking Events and Championships conducted
by the Society, and will make a claim for you provided the scoresheet
has been completed correctly (see below).
If you think you may have shot a record, you need to double check
that your scoresheet is filled in and signed correctly (i.e. the
archer, witness (usually one of the scorers) and either a Judge,
the DOS or Club official (for Minor records). Please remember
that if you don’t complete your scoresheet correctly your
claim may be rejected.
If your club is conducting an event that is listed on the SQAS
calendar but which is not one of the above, then the SQAS Recorder
may not be given a copy. So, for your personal record, print out
a copy of the Tournament and Minor records for your Division and
keep it handy. If you think you may have shot a record, ask your
Club Recorder to send a copy of your scoresheet (correctly filled
out, of course) and I will check it for you.
Special Note for Indoor Championships
With the SQAS and National Indoor Championships
coming up soon, I would like to remind all archers that,
not only Silver distance badges for SQAS (i.e. 6 in gold
or 6 in ten), but also Gold distance for National (6 in
gold, 6 in ten) may be ordered for $6.00 each.
Please make it clear on your scoresheet which
badge(s) you wish to order. Some archers may already have
silver badges from a previous SQAS Indoor. Please note that
for 3 arrow ends you can only claim for ends 1 & 2,
3 & 4, etc. (but not , for example, ends 2 & 3!).

Youth Target Archery Championships |
| Congratulations to two South Queensland archers,
Ryan Tyack (Junior Men Recurve) and Elizabeth Churchward (Cadet
Girl Compound), who will be representing Australia at the World
Youth Target Championships to be held in Turkey from 6 - 12 October
2008. SQAS has approved a small amount of funding for Elizabeth
to assist with her costs.
Congratulations also to Alison Hagaman from the Grange Company
of Target Archers, who has been selected as Team Manager for the
team.

Archery World Cup Series |
| Two of our archers, Robert Timms and Madeleine
Ferris, who are members of the AA High Performance Compound Program,
have also represented SQAS and Australia at international competition
this year. Robert has competed in all four events of the 2008
World Cup and Madeleine competed in the 2nd World Cup in Croatia.

| SQAS
Indoor Team REMINDER |
| If you would like to try and qualify for the 2008
SQAS Indoor Team then your Club will need to submit to the SQAS
Recorder the scoresheet of your best 18 metre FITA Indoor round
(60 arrows – Inner 10 for ALL compound archers) that you
have shot between 21 June and 20 July. You can shoot as many rounds
as you like during this period provided the round is shot at an
official Club shoot, details of which should have already been
provided to Lois. If your last club indoor shoot is on the 20th
July then your Club needs to email or phone your score to Lois
that day and mail the actual scoresheet on the Monday. Please
remember to fill in your scoresheet correctly otherwise it will
not be accepted.
